I believe that the death penalty serve a purpose: It is an EXTREMELY strong deterent to anyone who commits the most serious crimes. Therefore, as cruel as it may be - it should be retained. However, what's important is that the due process of the law be followed thoroughly and that everyone has the chance to appeal (maybe twice).

No. However it can seem harsh for certain types of crime such as drug smuggling, and therfore its application is a little extreme. Unfortunatley the pendulum has swung a little to far with respect to the application of the death penalty in Singapore. Other countries, such as Canada, that do not have the death penalty should consider it for murder and attempted murder. Here the pendulum has swung to far in the other direction. There has to be a balance so that a justice system, in any given country, is just. Meaning that the appropriate punishment is given for the crime. Unfortunately, opponents of the death penalty fail to understand this simple principle.

In my personal opinion, it should be modified and not abolish totally.

Some crime no need to sentence people to death one.

MURDER with intention - yes should go to the gallow.
No excuse for killing another human being out of personal grudge or rages.

But Drugs smuggling should be punish with maximum life inprisonment.
This will stop that person from smuggling drug for life.

And no need to take away this person's life.
It does serve the purposed already.

The death penalty should be fine tuned and not aboilish totally.

Just my personal opinion.
